Who is Jesus? (Part 1)

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

-John 1:1

For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.

-Colossians 2:10

1.) Jesus is Fully God

  • It was prophesied that God would have a Son, born of a virgin and we see that even as a baby, Jesus was worshipped in this manner.(Matthew 1:23 & Matthew 2:11)
  • Everything that exists today was created by Jesus. (John 1:3)
  • Jesus calls Himself “I am.” (John 8:58 & Exodus 3:13-15)
  • Jesus is equal to God; he humbled his position during His incarnation, not his being. (Philippians 2:6 & John 10:30)

2.) Jesus Became a Man

  • He became man; he put on humanity without subtracting his deity. (John 1:3,10,14, Hebrews 7:24)
  • He was made of a woman – (Isaiah 7:14, 9:6, Galatians 4:4, Matthew 1:1, 16-18)
  • He ate, slept, cried, walked, touched, talked, bled, and died.
  • As man he is not required to sin or die – Hebrews 4:15, 2 Corinthians 5:21, John 10:17-18
  • He had body, soul, and spirit, when he died and rose – Luke 23:42-52, 24:39
  • His humanity does not diminish, abandon, remove, or give up his deity.

3.)Why Did God Become a Man?

  • Jesus was not half and half, that’s a creamer; He was FULLY both God and man. This is a salvation issue:

  • Christ could only die if he was man, he could only die for our sins if he was God.
  • To be a proper mediator - Hebrews 2:9-18, 1 Timothy 2:5, Galatians 3:20
  • To manifest God to man – 1 Timothy 3:16, John 1:18, 31
  • To sit on David’s throne – Luke 1:32, Acts 2:29-30, 2 Timothy 2:8
  • To be preeminent in all things – Colossians 1:16-18
  • To reconcile all things to himself – Colossians 1:20, Romans 8:19-21
Next week, we will address the topic of Jesus’ ministry to Israel, as well as his ministry to the Body of Christ, in the second part of our two week series entitled
    “Who is Jesus?”.
