Genealogies and the Wisdom of God

                                 (Matthew 1:1-18)

“The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.”

-Matthew 1:1

1.) Individuals in the Genealogy

· The purpose of showing the lineage of Christ is to prove not only his Jewish heritage and bloodline, but to prove his position as the Messiah and promised “Son of David.” (King of Israel)     ( 2 Samuel 7:12&16, John 8:56, Revelation 22:16)

· Abraham: Receive Blessing, Bless All Nations, and Land (Genesis 12:3, Genesis 22:18, Genesis 15:18).

· Judas(Judah): God promised the kingdom would come through his seed, all the way to Shiloh, or Messiah (Genesis 49:10)

· Phares and Zara: Twins. Thamar: Mistaken, by Judah, as a harlot. Jesse: Father of David. David: defeated Goliath, man after God’s own heart (Uriah, the man David murdered over Bathsheba is mentioned). Solomon: Wisest man to ever live and richest king of his time. Josiah: became king when he was 8; he did what was right in the sight of God.

2.) Where it All (could have) Gone Wrong

· In Jeremiah 22:30, we see God instructs the prophet to tell Jechonias a horrifying message that could have very well negatively impacted the lineage of the Messiah.

“Thus saith the LORD, Write ye this man childless, a man that shall not prosper in his days: for no man of his seed shall prosper, sitting upon the throne of David, and ruling any more in Judah.”

· How would it be that God could make such a statement, but then still stay faithful to his promises to Abraham and David?

· In fact, many use this verse to say that:

-The kingdom is already here and Jesus will never really occupy the throne of David.

-Jesus could not be the Messiah, because of Joseph’s spoiled bloodline.

-Jesus’ lineage is legitimate, up until the point of Jechonias.

3.) God’s Wisdom vs. Satan’s Schemes

· Satan, ever since his fall from his heavenly status, has been on the hunt to spoil God’s plans. He has done this in a number of ways:

-Garden of Eden-Job-Sin and Bloodlines -Temptation of Jesus -Judas Iscariot -Jesus’ Death-Fall of Israel

· God’s wisdom and knowledge are unattainable and unstoppable. He is wiser than anyone or anything. He has no mishaps or unforeseen issues!  Just look:

· A Promise- Genesis 3:15

· Blessed God- Job 1:21

· Mary’s Line and Virgin Birth- Luke 3:23&Matthew 1:18

· God’s Word Prevails- Matthew 4:4,7,10

· Jesus Knew- John 13:27

· God had Planned This- 1 Corinthians 2:7

· God’s Wisdom Supersedes All Else- Romans 11:25-36
